My name is Mark Reside
I was inspired to write Stunno’s Surf Adventure whilst reading a rhyming book to my two daughters, I love surfing and had recently been given a surfboard shaped pillow, whilst I was reading my daughters kept waving the pillow in front of me, so I just started to adlib and came out with:
“There was a young surfer who went to the beach”
“Boards on the roof and wetsuit in reach”
I thought that sounds good, so I went and wrote it down, and for an hour it just flowed and I had the base for the Stunno story. A few weeks prior to this night I had been to Tina Jacobson’s to repair her computer, and we chatted about her artwork, I realised straight away that her style would be perfect for my story.
I did regularly trips down the coast, like in the book, to visit Tina, and work on the imagery, we worked really close together, she modified some of the imagery to suit changes I had made in the story and I adjusted some of the text to suit her images. This collaboration I believe is the reason we have produced such an awesome book.
I decided a few things as soon as I started this adventure, which it has been a real adventure, self-publishing and marketing my book. I decided that I wanted to keep it local, I live in Sale, The book was printed in Sale, and the Illustrator is from Fish Creek, 100% Gippsland Produced.
I also wanted to give back where I could, so for every book I sell I donate $1.00 to the Surfrider foundation Australia and for every 1000 books I sell I am donating $1000 to a Boardriders club also.
Writing a book, let alone a children’s book about surfing, was something I never believed I would do. It has been such a rewarding experience, and for me no matter how many copies I have sold, I am already a success as I know there are children out there that love my book and read it regularly, there is no better feeling than that.
Hi my name is Tina Jacobson and I am the illustrator of Stunno’s surf adventure.
I have been working, teaching and learning art for over 30 years. Painting and designing greeting cards, decoupage, murals, personalised canvas paintings and signs. My husband and i live on a farm in Gippsland Victoria where animals are a big source of inspiration for me.
So the character of Stunno just had to be an animal form. Something not too related to water…the Australian echidna seemed a perfect choice as I could adapt his spikes to look more like dread locks.
Mark is pretty easy going to work with and seemed to be very happy with the way Stunno and his friends evolved to suit his story.
Ive loved being a part of this book and am very grateful to mark for this fun and colourful adventure.
